September & October 2025 – WSA Autumn Arts Festival

The Theme for this Exhibition is – ‘We Are Walsall’

Inspiration includes buildings and architecture around Walsall, commemorative statues, the arboretum and Walsall businesses. Our artists were inspired by the leather and blacksmith industry Walsall is famous for saddles, bridles as well as other leather goods. Inspiration was also taken from the diversity of the people and cultures in Walsall and local beauty spots, parks, and nature reserves. What does Walsall mean to you?

We Are Walsall

This is an interesting exhibition looking at what Walsall means to our artists. with over 65 artworks inspired by the diversity of Walsall.

Artists have depicted the bus stops, the churches, walks in the parks and gardens, friends and family, places we pass on a bus, fleeting glimpses of the overlooked and forgotten.

This month we have three amazing artists exhibiting their work at The Crossing Gallery, and they couldn’t be more different. Do take the time to visit this exhibition it will delight and intrigue you.

Meet the Artists on Monday 18th August 11am – 1pm – everyone is welcome

Denise Bowen

Fusing my design and architecture background of accuracy, with the free whimsey of my imagination, I use metal, a material traditionally viewed as hard and unyielding, to create playful, flowing, and often pipe-filled works. These are in part inspired by the madness of William Heath Robinson’s over-engineered machines. My works are all embossed painstakingly by hand and embellished with a variety of inks, paints, and resins to create a colourful 3D piece that reflects the light bringing them to life. My aim is to add a host of intricate detail, that keeps the viewer returning for yet another look.

Denise is also displaying her handmade resin jewelry in the display cabinets.

Ispahani Mukah

Winner of the Birmingham open in 2025, Ispahani is an emerging multidisciplinary artist whose intricate ballpoint pen artworks explore identity, cultural spontaneity and the divine. Drawing from his Cameroonian heritage and life in the UK, his work revives overlooked histories and sparks dialogue around identity. The sensitivity of his biro drawings creating patterns to define his sitter and their clothing. Ispahani is definitely an artist to watch, as his career unfurls.

Buff Katsu KEI

Buffy as an Autistic Oriental Artist is inspired by her special interest in “Japan” and a deep-rooted connection to nature. Using a wide range of techniques from both “Sumi-E“ (su-mi-eh) Japanese ink painting and “xiěyì” (shi-ay-ee) Chinese Brush Painting methods. Buffy seeks to explore the delicate balance between structure and fluidity, order and chaos.

“Each creation explores the deepest, innermost thoughts of my autistic Japanese spirit revealing itself through the lines and strokes of time-honoured Oriental ink painting techniques.”

July 2025 – Sarah Fortes Mayer – Contemporary Sculpture

Sarah work on sculptures cast from her own body, bringing to the forefront how we view the older body. Elder is a continuing body of work to confront the popular view of what is beautiful. As we age we become scared worn creased and wrinkled, Srah like to show the beauty found in the crevies of our minds and body.

June & July 2025 – Artist Gordon Sanderson and Street Photographer Joe Frankham

Exhibition Opens 30th May – Extended to 24th July

Street Photographer Joe Frankham

Photography has been a hobby of mine for around the past 4 years, where I have spent most of my time travelling around the continent of Asia. I have a passion for capturing people in their natural environment, and trying to convey their emotions through to my work.  In this exhibition I bring you a selection of some of my favourite photos taken over the past few years. The people and places I have captured in these scenes mean a lot to me, and I hope that you feel some of what I felt as you look through the exhibition.

Artist Gordon Sanderson

A self taught artist from Walsall, my passion for art started at an early age, and shifted from viewing art to creating art when I retired. Being a member of the WSA has helped me to develop my creative skills, my work covers a wide range of nature and contemporary art. I work mainly in acrylics, but have worked in oils and watercolours too. I sell work at art markets and fairs, along with prints and cards.

June 2025 – Jude Hanly – Contemporary Ceramics

Jude’s ceramic practice dialogue is with nature, working primarily with stoneware clay and her own glazes, she creates vessels that carry the weight of history and landscape. Rather than offering a direct representation of the land, her pieces reflect its essence, its weathered textures, layered history, and traces of human presence over time. She is particularly drawn to the form of platters, vessels for gathering, sharing, and connection. Just as landscapes bear the marks of those who have lived and worked upon them, her ceramics hold the imprints of their making. In an era dominated by sleek, machine-finished surfaces, Jude seeks to reconnect people with something raw, tactile, and imperfect. Her vessels are textured, weathered, and sometimes fractured—echoing the beauty of landscapes shaped by forces beyond human control. “Nature is visceral, wild, and unfiltered. I want my work to embody that—to create something that is felt, something real.”

May 2025 – WSA Group Exhibition – Drawn Diamonds

Exhibition Opens 25th April – 29th May

An Exhibition of Drawings by Society Members

This is an intriguing exhibition of drawings by society members

Drawing is fundamental to all artists it’s where we start our creative ideas, for a sculpture, painting, jewelry, ceramics, the list goes on. This is how we as artists interrogate our subject; it doesn’t matter what medium we use a traditional pencil, biro, chalk, or pastel. I love to use charcoal, layers of dust and marks to excavate the image from the paper. Messy ink and feathers, I usually end up with more on me than the paper. When is a doodle not a drawing? I remember talking to someone who said they didn’t draw but doodled his ideas on bits of paper to hand. These were his thought processes before creating a final piece, yes I call them drawings, we so often under-value our scribblings.

Come along and have a coffee as you wander through the exhibition.

April 2025 – WSA Group Exhibition – The Nature of Colour

Exhibition Opens 28th March – 24th April

In Memory of Pauline Astle

Pauline said “when we stop to gaze at a landscape our senses drink in the beautiful colours, textures, sounds and smells around us; putting aside the stresses of everyday life to be in the moment”. Through the use of light, colour and texture she endeavoured to capture the feeling of this precious moment in her paintings. Every walk whether it was on a beautiful beach or a local park, gave Pauline further inspiration for her paintings. Working from photographs and sketches, Pauline painted predominantly in oil which allowed her to build up thick and thin layers, soft and hard edges, smooth or textural marks.

Meet The Artists – Saturday 5th April 11am – 1pm

Pauline was a generous and beautiful person, from the moment she joined the WSA, Pauline designed posters for exhibitions, and redesigned the Annual Exhibition Catalogue. Pauline will be sadly missed by everyone at the Walsall Society of Artists.

July – Artists Pam Renhard and John Renhard – ‘Lines of Descent’

Exhibition Opens 29th June – 25th July

Artistic Grudge Match: Baby Boomer vs Gen X Slacker

Art is often described as a dialogue between the creator and the observer, a conversation that transcends time and space. But what happens when this conversation takes place within a family, across different generations, and with contrasting artistic philosophies? The exhibition “Lines of Descent: Artistic Grudge Match: Baby Boomer vs. Gen X Slacker” at St Paul’s Gallery in Walsall brings us an intriguing answer.

Running from June 29th to July 25th, this exhibition features the works of Pam Renhard, a Baby Boomer, and her son John Renhard, a Gen X Slacker. Both have a deep passion for art, yet they approach their creative processes with distinctly different styles and methodologies. This divergence prompts the playful yet profound question posed by the exhibition: should it be “descent” or “dissent”?

April – Artist Jude Hanly An Exhibition of Untold Vistas

Exhibition Opens 28th March – 30th April

Jude is inspired and fascinated by nature, recalling places experienced or imagined as the work forms, creating from a place of no time, no space. She uses marks like an impressed memory, trying to recapture the essence of that moment.

Jude constructs images with multiple layering, but at the same time leaving space for surprise, for something unexpected to happen. Her paintings are created through a performative process of applying pigments, oils, creating pools, then tilting and manoeuvring the canvas. “Water is such a powerful force in shaping the natural landscape” and by using the fluidity of the paint in her process, resonates with ways in which the landscape is formed and eroded.

March – Artist Anne Nicholls

Exhibition Opens 28th February – 27th March

Anne Nicholls has been a member of Walsall Society of Artists for many years, and is an accomplished watercolourist. She is happiest when painting landscapes and florals.

Steve is a Self Taught Artist, based in the West Midlands, Steve specialises in his own unique take on cubism and abstract art. Often taking inspiration from environmental and conservation issues, Steve will be equally moved to create a painting inspired by his inner thoughts, frustrations and personal day to day life.

Teases the Eye

Steve’s artwork teases the viewer’s eye and over time allows the viewer to interpret the painting and impart their own perspective. By a clever use of lines, creating a three dimensional space, they take the gaze of the audience across and then through the painting, on an otherwise two dimensional space.
