Drawing is fundamental to all artists it’s where we start our creative ideas, for a sculpture, painting, jewelry, ceramics, the list goes on. This is how we as artists interrogate our subject; it doesn’t matter what medium we use a traditional pencil, biro, chalk, or pastel. I love to use charcoal, layers of dust and marks to excavate the image from the paper. Messy ink and feathers, I usually end up with more on me than the paper. When is a doodle not a drawing? I remember talking to someone who said they didn’t draw but doodled his ideas on bits of paper to hand. These were his thought processes before creating a final piece, yes I call them drawings, we so often under-value our scribblings.
Come along and have a coffee as you wander through the exhibition.
Exhibition Opens 28th March – 24th April
Pauline said “when we stop to gaze at a landscape our senses drink in the beautiful colours, textures, sounds and smells around us; putting aside the stresses of everyday life to be in the moment”. Through the use of light, colour and texture she endeavoured to capture the feeling of this precious moment in her paintings. Every walk whether it was on a beautiful beach or a local park, gave Pauline further inspiration for her paintings. Working from photographs and sketches, Pauline painted predominantly in oil which allowed her to build up thick and thin layers, soft and hard edges, smooth or textural marks.
Meet The Artists – Saturday 5th April 11am – 1pm
Pauline was a generous and beautiful person, from the moment she joined the WSA, Pauline designed posters for exhibitions, and redesigned the Annual Exhibition Catalogue. Pauline will be sadly missed by everyone at the Walsall Society of Artists.

Gwenda Jones is a contemporary British portrait and figuritive sculptor known for her unique exploration of human and animal studies, where texture meets form to create deeply emotive works.
Her pieces, ranging from intimate portraits to large-scale sculptures, capture the essence of her subjects with a refined sensitivity and an innate understanding of form. Gwenda’s sculptures often celebrate her lifelong love of horses. This passion began during her early childhood in the rural landscapes of Oxfordshire, where this connection to nature is reflected in the graceful dynamism of her equine sculptures, which evoke a sense of power, serenity and human connections.
This is a group exhibition brought together by 28 of our Walsall Society of Artists members. It is an eclectic mix of styles and genres from ceramics to papercrafts, paintings to sculptures, collage and mixed media, there is something to excite everyone.
For the first time since taking on St Pauls Gallery at the Crossing we will be exhibiting 3D work in the newly available glass display cases. So ceramics and sculpture will be a focal point of the exhibition.

Walsall Society of Artists, Elizabeth Whitehouse, Hazel Lea, Ann Hackett, Steve Woodhams, Jean Walker, Pam Renhard, and John Renhard, have come together in a group exhibition as “The Painterly Set”.
All of the artists are extremely talented and the exhibition shows the full diversity of styles and skills that the Walsall Society of Artists has to offer and share. There is something for everyone, from traditional oil painting landscapes and studies, by Hazel Lea and Jean Walker.
Vibrant watercolours by Elizabeth Whitehouse, and delicate florals by Ann Hackett. Contemporary still life, and landscapes in acrylics by Pam Renhard. Meticulous eye bending abstracts by Steve Woodhams, to intriguing satirical digital creations by John Renhard, all thought provoking and inspiring.
Anne Nicholls has been a member of Walsall Society of Artists for many years, and is an accomplished watercolourist. She is happiest when painting landscapes and florals, she teaches an art group in Great Bar and this exhibition includes selected works from her students.
Art is often described as a dialogue between the creator and the observer, a conversation that transcends time and space. But what happens when this conversation takes place within a family, across different generations, and with contrasting artistic philosophies? The exhibition “Lines of Descent: Artistic Grudge Match: Baby Boomer vs. Gen X Slacker” at St Paul’s Gallery in Walsall brings us an intriguing answer.
Running from June 29th to July 25th, this exhibition features the works of Pam Renhard, a Baby Boomer, and her son John Renhard, a Gen X Slacker. Both have a deep passion for art, yet they approach their creative processes with distinctly different styles and methodologies. This divergence prompts the playful yet profound question posed by the exhibition: should it be “descent” or “dissent”?
Saturday 8th June 11am – 1pm
Come along and listen to our local poets recite poems inspired by the artwork, they will be running workshops and reciting their own work at this fantastic venue, “All are Welcome”.
Jude is inspired and fascinated by nature, recalling places experienced or imagined as the work forms, creating from a place of no time, no space. She uses marks like an impressed memory, trying to recapture the essence of that moment.
Jude constructs images with multiple layering, but at the same time leaving space for surprise, for something unexpected to happen. Her paintings are created through a performative process of applying pigments, oils, creating pools, then tilting and manoeuvring the canvas. “Water is such a powerful force in shaping the natural landscape” and by using the fluidity of the paint in her process, resonates with ways in which the landscape is formed and eroded.

Steve is a Self Taught Artist, based in the West Midlands, Steve specialises in his own unique take on cubism and abstract art. Often taking inspiration from environmental and conservation issues, Steve will be equally moved to create a painting inspired by his inner thoughts, frustrations and personal day to day life.
Steve’s artwork teases the viewer’s eye and over time allows the viewer to interpret the painting and impart their own perspective. By a clever use of lines, creating a three dimensional space, they take the gaze of the audience across and then through the painting, on an otherwise two dimensional space.
Himley Park and Hall is a beautiful exhibition setting. The grounds and Exhibition are free so why not have a morning or afternoon out to browse the Walsall Society of Artists current art exhibition.
