June 2024 Newsletter
Posted on Jun 17, 2024Ah, British weather – ever the fickle companion, teasing us with glimpses of sunshine before inevitably succumbing to rain. Yet, in true British spirit, we persevere, making the best of it and finding solace in our creative endeavours. This brings us quite neatly to our upcoming events, where we dive into the world of art and creativity. Join us for a series of enlightening and engaging monthly meetings from June through September.
Monthly Demo Evenings: A Calendar of Creativity
13 June 2024 – Gary Sturgess: ‘Picture Framing Demonstration’
(This Week!) We’re calling it third time lucky for Gary Sturgess. After two previous cancellations due to Covid and a surprise snowstorm, Gary is finally set to showcase his expertise in framing artwork. As a professional who frames works for several of our members, Gary will share invaluable tips on selecting the right frame to enhance your pieces and prepare them for exhibitions. A good frame can elevate your work, making it stand out and even increasing its chances of a sale or exhibition acceptance. Join us for an evening of “watch and learn,” where every detail counts.
11 July 2024 – Gwenda Jones: ‘Introduction to Ceramic Sculpture’
This session promises to be a hands-on delight! Gwenda Jones, a newly joined and valued member, is a professional sculptor specializing in wildlife, people, and landscapes. She will introduce us to the world of ceramic sculpture, allowing attendees to get their hands dirty and experience the magic of transforming clay into art. Mark your calendars – this is one evening you won’t want to miss!
8 August 2024 – Four Painters Painting: ‘Fun Social Evening’
Our annual social highlight, this event is perfect for mingling with fellow art enthusiasts over a glass of wine or a soft drink. Four of our leading artists will be demonstrating their techniques in a relaxed and jovial atmosphere. Whether you’re there for the art or the camaraderie, there’s always something for everyone. Don’t forget to check out our ‘objet d’art’ table or the auction for a chance to take home a bargain, all while supporting the society.
12 September 2024 – Mark Lippett: ‘Landscapes in Graphitint Pencil’
Award-winning artist and tutor Mark Lippett returns by popular demand to demonstrate his captivating landscape techniques using Graphitint pencils. This innovative medium combines the subtlety of graphite with the richness of colour, perfect for creating atmospheric landscapes. Since his last visit, Mark has gained further acclaim, including an appearance on Sky Art’s Landscape Artist of the Year. Come along to see his magic in action.
Hot Beverages and Half-time Chats
We’re thrilled to announce the addition of hot drinks during our meeting intervals. Enjoy a freshly brewed cup of tea or coffee and a biscuit for just 50p, with all proceeds supporting our society.
A Gentle Nudge on Framing (But Very Necessary!)
Let’s revisit Gary’s insightful demonstration on framing. Over the years, our committed ‘hanging committee’ has navigated countless hurdles due to inadequately prepared frames. Despite clear guidelines, we still encounter issues such as mislabelled works, incorrect or absent hanging hooks, and even frames that are falling apart. These problems lead to unnecessary delays and frustration. Please, take the time to read and adhere to the instructions thoroughly. A well-prepared piece not only showcases your professionalism but also honours the time and effort of our volunteers.
Exhibitions: A Showcase of Talent
