LS Lowry is one of the most popular British painters of all time, and we’re fortunate to own the world’s biggest public collection of his work. Lowry is renowned for his dedication to depicting the daily lives of northern British people, often set against the backdrop of the modern industrial city. In contrast, his seascapes and country landscapes are typically empty and even desolate. He enjoyed sketching from real life and then painting from memory, occasionally drawing on influences from surrealism, impressionism, and other styles as he developed his unique approach. Having spent over 40 years in and around Salford, his paintings continue to resonate with both locals and visitors to the city.
