June and July 2022 with WSA

In June we welcomed Anna Stellinga as our demonstration artist

Anna didn’t demonstrate as such, but she did bring in a lot of work and ideas books  which she talked about and passed around all evening. They were very interesting.
She explained her works, talked about what inspires her and also how she gets over copyright issues.
She held everyone’s interest throughout the evening.

Also in June, I was fortunate to be invited into Butts Primary School, Walsall, to talk to the reception class about being an artist.
They were about to learn about Van Gogh and have a go at painting sunflowers.
They looked at some of my flower paintings and asked about the equipment I used, how long did it take to paint a picture, how long had I been painting etc. For five years old they asked some very pertinent questions.
After the questions and answers they settled down to create their own flower paintings. Their teacher, Miss Fellows, had supplied a good selection of flowers for them to paint. They also had a
very good selection of mediums to use, water colours, pastels, felt tipped pens, paint thickened with flour to make very textured works and pencil crayons.
They were very taken with  the task they’d been set and produced some delightful paintings.

I really hope they continue to enjoy their art.

Our July demonstration date saw the return of Adrian Clamp.
Adrian took us, step by step, through the creation of a portrait using willow charcoal, charcoal pencils and an eraser.
The 300gm paper was covered entirely with charcoal. More charcoal was added to create the initial image and to deepen tones and the eraser was used for highlights.
His wife, Alison, sat very patiently, as his model, for almost two hours.
It was a very interesting and inspiring evening.

The image begins to appear.

Last Saturday 32 0f use ventured to Patchings Art Festival. It was a very full day with so many things to see, try and buy as well as watching a variety of demonstrations.

It was good to see Steve Woodhams, a society member,  displaying his works in the painter’s marquee. It was an excellent stand, his first time there.

It was a very enjoyable day despite the lack of air con on the return coach journey.

Hopefully to be repeated next year (not the uncomfortable return journey though).

Our next meeting will be a Social Evening, Thursday 11th August, 7.30pm

Time to enjoy a glass of wine, have a good chat, watch the four member demonstrators, bid in the auction for a work donated by artist Phil Biggs and also show off one of your works if you’d like to bring one along.

Look forward to seeing you there.
