David McGuire ‘I used to be a photographer’

Walsall Society of Artists’ very own chairman David did a demo on Thursday 14th November 2024. An accomplished amateur photographer took us through a journey of highlights, starting with his still life capturing the beauty of a garlic, tulips in black and white, to a lamp shade on top of a table ageing with time with growth of moss, a series of rusted objects each with a slight introduction of colour. Moving onto landscape where he spoke about composition, contrast, colours, highlights, lowlights, light/dark and nature.

He then moved onto travel where he passionately spoke of places he had been to, why he took each photograph and what is was of. Travelling to extraordinary and cultural places, photographing vibrant portraits ‘The gift’ in Venice, a scenic landscape in ‘rural Bulgaria’, a colourful flower market and ‘Meditation in India man and dog’, in Calcutta, a stunning cottage surrounded by snow with a picturesque mountain range in the background, and the stunning ceramic tiles of Sydney Opera House, not forgetting the simply incredible ‘sunset’, last but not least the ‘Houses for peace’, where this ever changing mural is replaced with new work all the time how astonishing.

David spoke of how art and photography now are intertwined and compliment each other. He shared different processes he uses and the thinking behind each photograph, he certainly has an eye for detail. David’s photographs are nothing if not beautiful and captivating, each one with a story behind it. The photographs are truly stunning and speak for themselves, understandably why many were award winning.

Thank you David for sharing your time, ideas, inspiration and giving us an insight through your lens.
