Thursday 13th October: John Davenport : portrait demonstration

Portraiture has become a major interest for John since he retired as Professor of Primary Dental Care at the University of Birmingham. He has staged solo exhibitions in Helmsley and the University of Birmingham and taken part in group shows with the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and the Birmingham Art Circles. Portrait commissions include the Vice Chancellor of Malmo University, Sweden and the founder of the Birmingham Medical Institute. John regularly gives demonstrations and workshops. At present, he is Hon. Secretary of the RBSA. John’s primary concern is the ‘landscape’ of the human face. He creates a fairly literal representation of the sitter’s appearance and character. This is expressed by a variety of marks, giving a lively, painterly image. John’s preferred medium is acrylic, because it enables working at high speed.
