Portrait Artist of the Year 2018: David Tennant, Michaela Coel, James Morrison

What a simple and elegant delight this show is. Like Bake Off at its best, it features nice people encouraging each other as they employ a skill that has required talent and dedication to hone. 

While Portrait Artist doesn’t dig too deep into its contestants’ personalities – other than the way their work reveals their inner selves, of course – the wide variation in how different people tackle the same task is fascinating, especially in these initial heats when there are nine artists all at it at once. 

The three celebrity sitters are James Morrison, Michaela Coel and David Tennant. Frank Skinner and Joan Bakewell are an excellent pair of hosts.
