History of the Walsall Society of Artists
Walsall Society of Artists was founded during December 1949 by Alderman T P Riley, JP. He gathered together a number of notable citizens who were interested in Art. The first Committee consisted of:
- President: E M Elliot of Elliot’s the Chemists, Park Street.
- Chairman: J Dixon, Manager of the Walsall Branch, Midland Bank.
- Secretary: G Willott, ARCA, Headmaster, School of Art in Goodall Street.
- Treasurer: W W Shuffrey owner of Shuffrey’s Hardware Shop, 42 Stafford Street, Walsall.
Between 1955 and 1967, Miss E M Bachelor-Flint, FRSA became President of Walsall Society of Artists. She was the Art Teacher at Queen Mary’s Grammar School for Boys, later becoming Founder and Headteacher of Hydesville School, Walsall. Miss Flint stated at a Society Committee Meeting that she would seek election to Walsall Town Council solely to fight for a Walsall Art Gallery; this was needed as a cultural asset for the town and a place to exhibit the work of the Walsall Society of Artists.
She was later successful in becoming Mayor and realised her ambition with the official opening of the E.M. Flint Art Gallery. The Society’s 16th Annual Exhibition was held there on Friday, 15th October 1965. Subsequently, this led to the building of the New Art Gallery, Walsall, which opened during 2000. Walsall Society of Artists Annual Exhibition is now held at this prestigious venue.
